New Doll - Unnamed

This little doll came together quickly, but is yet unnamed. She was created using the techniques I struggled through to create Fradira. You can read about Fradira here.

Fradira's little friend has a wire armature.
Her feet are made from Apoxie Sculpt. Hands are machine sewn,
attached and stuffed with cotton batting. Armature is then wrapped in batting.

All wrapped in batting and ready to be "skinned".

I wanted to try yet a couple of other techniques on Fradira, but was afraid that I would mess her up or wouldn't like the result. The techniques...the first was just just using paperclay to sculpt the head and shoulders into the fabric of the body...awesome technique...loved it...worked great!

The other technique was just sealing and painting the surfaces of her soft sculptured body...that also worked great! She'll be a little cutie!

Fradira is Late!

Meet "Fradira". "Fradira" is my latest doll that I am creating for the ADO Quarterly Challenge - Steampunk Dolls. She should have been completed April 1...she is late! Fradira is just now squeezing into her Lycra body skin. I love this picture! Have you ever rushed to put something on over your head and it gets stuck? Smiles.

Fradira is pretty special. First, she is a big doll for me. When finished, she will stand approximately 24 inches tall. My biggest doll ever! She was created using a wire armature reinforced with copper tubing for strength. Her soft body is made of muslin stuffed with cotton batting. Her arms and legs are wrapped in cotton batting followed by gauze. Her body is "skinned" with cotton Lycra (another first for me).

Fradira's head and shoulders are creating using a wonderful Cloth Overlay technique taught by Susie McMahon, one of my favorite doll artists. I am VERY pleased with my first cloth overlay doll head using Susie's tutorial available in her Etsy shop here.

Fradira's hands were created using a technique learned at the "Handling Hands" class taught by Judy Skeel available on one of my favorite shopping websites, Joggles here.

Another first with Fradira is that I started from a drawing. It is amazing to me that I actually remained true to my original sketch of her size and body proportions. I also sketched her costume. It was REALLY hard once I had sketched the costume, not to start on it...but of course I couldn't without having the finished doll to use to fit the costume properly...aargh! Here are pictures of the sketches (I will save the costume sketch for the the next "Fradira" post).

A Tribute to My Friend, Richard Lafayette

Sometimes life just pushes the art aside...

Late on Friday afternoon I received a message that an old high school friend (Kathy) had tagged me in a photo on Facebook. About 4:00 PM, I signed on to Facebook to take a look at the photo. The caption on the photo read, "Richard and Lezlei George Washington Preparatory High, Watisishumbas '72 30 Year Reunion. RIP our brother and friend." That is how I found out that my friend of over 40 years had lost his battle with liver cancer. He had passed away early Wednesday morning. Questions flooded my brain! What had happened? Had his prognosis changed? Why wasn't I contacted BEFORE he took his last breath. I wanted to be there. I wanted to make sure he had everything he needed. I wanted to hold his hand. I wanted to tell him I loved him one last time.

His brother's Facebook page contained the details of his funeral arrangements - the next morning at 8:00 AM in Oakland, CA. I called the funeral home to confirm the arrangements. Fortunately, I was able to get a flight into San Francisco on Friday night. I had only enough time to throw a few items in a bag and head for the airport. I had to change planes in Phoenix, so I carried my bag on for fear the airline might lose it and leave me to attend the funeral in my jogging outfit (which I would have done if I had to).

So Saturday, March 26, 2011 I attended the funeral and said goodbye to my friend, Richard Lafayette.

I had called and text him several times over the last 3 weeks with no response. So I contacted his brother (a busy attorney) who promised to call. When he offered to call rather than respond with Richard's condition, I feared things may not have been going well - my last call was to his brother's office (I can be bold when I need to) on Wednesday to leave a message with his secretary. My friend was already gone and I didn't know it.

We first met in 1969 at George Washington High School in Los Angeles, CA, where we both attended. After graduating, Richard was one of the few that I have maintained a friendship with from high school. We would lose contact from time to time over the years - but he would always find me and we would renew the friendship as if we had never been apart.

I missed a call from him about 8 months ago. As I lay down to go to sleep, I thought to text him to ask if he was OK...and the phone rang and he said, "Lezlei, this has been the worst day in my entire life.". He went on to explain that his wife of 39 years had died that day unexpectedly. So we encouraged each other not knowing that there were still some difficult days ahead.

Another call only a few months ago to tell me he had been diagnosed with liver cancer. He explained the treatment plan to me in detail and I gave him my list of things he had to do. At one point he stopped me and said, "Lezlei, I have family, friends and people who care about me here in Oakland - I'm not by myself." There was silence on the phone for a moment - I had to process that - he had other friends besides me...smiles. But that is the kind of friend he was - he always made me feel so special and "as if" I was the only friend. His services were evidence of the many family, friends and co-workers who loved him - just like me. As he took his last breath, he was surrounded by his family from Dallas and two sons and the assurances of a life well lived.

He visited Dallas the end of last year and I was able to spend a couple of hours with him and drove him to the airport for his trip home. I am so thankful for that time. I am eternally grateful for the many years of wonderful friendship. I am trusting God that we got everything out of it that we should have.

Even though I wasn't there - I know he knew that I loved him because I told him often enough- we would end most conversations with that reminder, "I love you".

Isn't that smile infectious! I love you, Richard and I will miss you forever...

TDP Update - The Twins Arrive

Just a short post to let you know I have received my first ADO Travelling Doll Project (TDP) visitor...that is VISITORS...my first TDP visit is from doll "twins", "Zebulon" and "Caledonia" from Bakersfield, CA (which happens to be my birth place).

Zebulon and Caledonia were created by Martha of Ayala Art. I will be sharing pictures and more about them later...we have to talk first...smiles.

"Big Maggie" is on her way to Florida for her first stop with Moriah of MLB Studios. I miss her already. You can read about her send off here.

ADO Travelling Doll Project Begins!

I belong to a group of wonderful doll makers called "Art Dolls Only" (ADO). This is the third year of the ADO Travelling Doll Project and I am participating again this year. The first dolls shipped March 1st. Last year the project was published in 2 issues of "Doll Collector" magazine! Briefly, here is how it works...

The participating doll makers are divided up into teams.
Each team member begins the creation of a doll using any technique desired.
Each member also creates a journal for the doll created.
The doll and journal is mailed round-robin to each team member, who builds upon what each member has done prior to bring the doll to a completed state.

All that to say...I will be sharing the journey of my doll "Margaret Indigo Grimsby" (aka "Big Maggie") as she travels across the country to 5 other wonderful doll makers. I will be posting a link to her story on the Travelling Doll Project Blog as well as sharing other pictures here on my blog. "Big Maggie" was shipped to Florida today to Moriah Betterly of MLB Studios, a full time artist / doll maker and instructor (working on my doll woohoo!). I can wait to see what Moriah adds to "Big Maggie".

See how carefully she is holding those hands...she's pretty proud of them! I learned how to make Maggie's hands in a workshop called "Handling Hands" taught by Judy Skeel at Joggles.com. This workshop was EXCELLENT!!! The class is being offered again on March 16 at an extremely affordable price which includes patterns for 2 types of hands and tips on how to fix some of the issues that articulated hands present (e.g. busted seams). But honestly, I followed the instructions and my hands came out PERFECT the first time!!! (Click on images to enlarge.)

Sometimes the Yarn Calls Me

I learned crochet, knitting, sewing, quilting, gardening, and cooking at the feet of my Great Grandmother, Sally Brown. What a blessing it was to have "Mama" until my junior year of high school! When she passed away in 1971, the sewing that she had taught me had blossomed into designing and sewing all but a few pieces of my clothing for school. I would always save my "lunch money" to buy pieces of fabric. Back then, fabric was very affordable and sewing your clothing was a very economical alternative to purchasing ready-made items.

There were many days that I would come home with an "idea" of an outfit that I wanted to wear to school the next day. I would quickly finish my homework and maybe dinner for the family and start to sew. I would design the pattern pieces, cut and sew the fabric sometimes waking early in the morning to finish a hem or any handwork. There were many nights my mother would come in and send me to bed...I would wake u even earlier and finish my outfit and be off to school before she arose for the morning!

But I digress...we are talking about the yarn today! Crochet and knitting are both so relaxing. There is not a lot of set up required like some of the other hobbies I enjoy...it's just you, the yarn, the crochet or knitting needles, and maybe a pattern. No clean-up...just tuck your project back into the yarn basket when you're done for the day.

I always have an abundant supply of beautiful yarns (and fabric). Often when I am shopping for other items, a beautiful yarn (or fabric...smiles) will beckon me, jump into my shopping basket and make its way to my home and into my yarn stash with all the other beautiful yarns.

I have been making hats and scarfs (some skinny) and fingerless gloves...some patterns work up very quickly. Most recently, this beautiful "Neapolitan" colored yarn beckoned me. It was so relaxing working on this beautiful hat and skinny scarf. It is worked with a combination of a modified "puff" stitch with single crochet borders on the hat and skinny scarf. I have placed the Neapolitan set in my etsy shop here.

My next project...get all the items placed in my etsy shop to make room for the next call of the yarn...smiles.

Serendipitous Substrates

Wasn't that a mouthful! I often peruse the aisles of the Dollar Store (yes, the Dollar Store) actually LOOKING for "fortunate discoveries". The inventory ar the Dollar Store is constantly changing - so there is always something new for your consideration. One thing that I keep my eye out for is "unlikely substrates" - items that can be used as substrates for my mixed media art creations.

Today I found shrink-wrapped pictures of flowers glued on 1/4 inch pressed board substrates. Each picture measures 7 inches by 9 inches. The back of each picture included the hardware to hang the picture. The flowers were pretty, but not anything that I would display in my home (let's just leave it at that...smiles). But the sturdy substrate that was used makes the pictures excellent (and economical) substrates for mixed media! Added bonus - it's ready for hanging! This what I did...

Removed the shrinkwrap
Sanded the picture surface to remove the glossy surface and prepare it to "grab" the media
Glued miscellaneous papers from my paper stash onto the substrate using Golden Matte Gel
Allowed papers to dry
Added a wash of white Gesso
Et voila! A sturdy, economical background ready to hold my next mixed media creation

Look what a buck can get you! I bet I know where you're going this weekend! Have fun!

I finally got to talk to the my beautiful birthday boy today (isn't he handsome). Clarence is 31 years old today...whew!...he's getting close to my age...smiles. OOAK Mixed Media Collage - "Sister"

"Sister" is a OOAK mixed media collage on an 8” x 8” x 2” stretched wrapped gallery canvas and is part of my Heritage Collage Series. The canvas is painted and textured using acrylics in rust and olive tones. The piece is embellished with paper, a bit of vintage lace, and a silk flower. Rusted items were added and contrast the piece beautifully. The back of the canvas is covered to prevent dust and provide a “gallery finish”. “Sister” is ready for hanging.

Am I Ready for Christmas?

Well by now I'm sure the "big guy" has made his list and checked it twice. How is your list doing..did you check it twice?

My list wasn't very long this year. I am proud that this year I didn't procrastinate (nsm) about my trips to the post office. All my gifts that needed to be mailed have made it safely to their destination and are safely tucked under the recipients' Christmas tree...CHECK! I sent Biscoff to all my siblings and a few special friends...the best cookies in the entire world.

I am still doing little projects around the house to glam it up for Christmas...it's all about the bling this year for me. Mostly it has been just displaying those festive items that have been packed away since last year's after Christmas sales...SCORE! But of course there have been creative projects...

My glorious 12 Tags of Christmas journey with Tim Holtz inspired these gift tags...

A special Christmas art doll for my favorite grand daughter (becoming a tradition..this is year 3)...

A little technical creativity...

Today's project is faux mercury glass to build a Christmas display for a table. I am using instructions that were shared by Eileen at bluebirdluxe. I have collected all the supplies:

1. Vases from the dollar store

2. Krylon Looking Glass Mirror-Like Paint

3. Spray Bottle for Water

Askari, the Keeper

A recent mixed media art doll, "Askari, the Keeper" arrived safely to her new home in California to a dear friend of over 40 years, Edith.

Askari, the Keeper is a one-of-a-kind (OOAK) Art Doll or “figurative sculpture” created for the birthday of a dear long-time friend, Edith. She offers one of the many hearts she has kept over the years, each representing years of love and almost 40 years of faithful friendship. What a blessing! (Now ya-ll know I am over 40...smiles.)

About Askari: She stands approximately 20” tall . Her face, hands and feet are hand sculpted from paper clay, hand painted with acrylics, then stained and sealed. Her body is a soft sculpture with a wire armature re-enforced on the right side with copper to allow her to stand. Her “hair” is made from the twisted pages of a vintage book of poetry that have been sealed and strengthened with bead gel. Askari’s clothing includes bits of vintage ribbon, lace, and fabric; her sleeves made from reclaimed silk fabric; her shawl from a vintage lace cuff. The hearts she carries are all hand-made from bits of fabric, and lace.

The Best Christmas Card I Ever Got !

There are moments in the struggle of being a single Mom that are so precious that they can never be forgotten and will always be cherished. Just wanted to share a hand-made Christmas card I received from my youngest son Aaron many years ago- definitely one such moment...

The front was simple...just "Merry Christmas".

But what was inside was a poem my son had written and one of the greatest gifts I have received...

Just in case you can't read from the image...it says:

When I was young

You made sure songs of Nat King Cole were sung,

The tree was well decorated,

And I was well loved,

Everything I wanted you found a way to get,

I think because you loved to see

My eyes happily lit,

Now that I’m older that same love is true

You constantly keep giving

Lucky Me!!! I was on the wait list for the Tim Holtz classes being offered by Monica at Stamp Asylum in Plano, Texas...and I got into the "Creative Blocks" class. It was a blast as always with Tim, Mario and the crew. Two other great classes were offered...maybe next time...

I LOVE this President! This office is NOT easy. I love this President, not because he is perfect, but because he has the wherewithall to stand up in the midst of adversity and do the thing (based on the intelligence that is available to him) that he believes is right for this country and the integrity to stand behind it!

What Happens in Vegas...

A Vintage Wooden Screen...Hmmm

Well...I was over in Bonham, Texas a couple of weeks ago and picked up this vintage wooden screen. I am looking forward to dressing it up to hang on my bedroom wall. Isn't it LOVELY!

Now let's catch up! Here are some bedroom transformations (remember...new apartment).

First...a "faux" headboard fashioned from a metal wall accent purchased for 15 bucks at one of my favorite stores. Loved the rust...but painted with "oyster" acrylic paint and distressed to "flow" with the bedroom theme.

Next...I redecorated this lamp...yet again. I painted the base silver...added lots of tulle to the lampshade and a distressed fabric flower and a row of ribbon. Finshed up by framing a piece of vintage jewelry in a frame found at a garage sale for 25 cents.

Are You Still There?

I know! It has been 9 months since my last post! Are you still there? I hope so.

In my last post, I was on my way to the Tim Holtz cruise the "Artful voyage" to the Mexican Riviera. It was WONDERFUL!!! Tim and his entire team are so gracious!

So let's spend this week catching up...briefly.

I remain a creative spirit. I will share some of the projects from the recent months. I moved to an apartment 3 months ago (until I find a house) in order to have more creative space...long story. My recent creativity has been associated with getting settled in the new space and unpacking boxes that have been in storage since my move from sunny California.

I have a nice patio space and side yard. Here is some of the patio creativity.
First, my Mom found this Singer sewing machine base at a second store about 5 years ago and never did anything with it. I added a boot tray, a few plant and touches. I love it!

I planted a container vegetable and herb garden (has to be able to move to the house easily).

Friday Fill-Ins

I am so happy it is Friday!!!
And...here we go!

I have a history of procrastinating about everything!

How to stay on a plan to lose weight is something I wish I knew.

I'm eating (or recently ate) Lemon Lime Splash cake crumbled into some Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla ice cream…YUM!

There are only 7 MORE SLEEPS and I am on the road…[to my 8 day Artful Voyage in Mexico cruise with Tim Holtz!]

So that's it, that's all I needed to do...do the doggone thing.

I have NEVER believed, where men are concerned, that something is better than nothing!

And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to talking to the new man in my life, tomorrow my plans include finishing my packing for the cruise and finishing my piece for the ADO September Challenge - Clowns and Sunday, I want to spend some time with my boo!

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to hiding in my room, tomorrow my plans include dinner with a friend or hiding in my room and Sunday, I want to go to church instead of hide in my room!

New WIPs - Ready for Costuming

Here are 2 new WIPs (I see a pattern here)...I really am going to get them finished. I haven't worked with polymer clay for a while...I wasn't as frustrated this time as my skill has improved somewhat. The heads, arms, and legs are made from polymer clay attached to wrapped wire armature.

I have tried a few different body techniques...I think the wrapped armature is my favorite.

TIP: I wrapped with pantyhose from the 99 cent store and padded here and there with batting. See my previous blog on the Doll magazine.

Use Your Head...Great Idea!!!

Grab your keys and head to the craft store and make a beeline to the Halloween section (which amazingly is already on sale to make room for the Thanksgiving items) and grab all the skulls you can!

There is a wonderful article by Linda Hansen in the October edition of "Doll Crafter & Costuming" magazine (I KNOW I have magazines issues!) page 20, "Use Your Head - Plastic skulls found in craft stores made a great base on which to sculpt a head". DUH!!! I should have thought of that!!!

The article shows you step by step how it's done. And get this! Linda uses beads for the eyes! I think this is a great idea for novice sculptors like me!

I will let you know how it goes!!

Finished ADO Challenge - Birds Attack

Here is my finished ADO Halloween Challenge piece, "Birds Attack". Would you believe at one point he was green? Monsters are hard for me...but I guess that is what it is all about...a challenge.

"Birds Attack" is made from apoxie sculpt with a wire armature, birds also made from apoxie sculpt. Wings are made from some delightful wire mesh gifted to me by my sister-in-law Sherry of GotArt! I used mohair for his scary hair-do. His shroud is made from dyed cheesecloth.

I am still trying to finish the Blue Fairy for my sister Penny's birthday (which was June 21). Penny was actually here last week for my Mom's birthday. She had hair for a minute, but I decided that I didn't like it. I stuck her in a jar of buttons while I fiddled with her skirt. Still need wings...I better get busy!!!

She also has an ouchie on her elbow I have sanded down so that I can fix.

After you read this post, you may be embarrassed that you know me.

I decided that I would make my granddaughter a button bracelet...quick, easy, cute. So I googled "buttons". I identified a vendor that was within driving distance and decided to give them a call first...

Ring...Hello, Benno's Buttons...Hello, I located your store on the internet...do you carry buttons...yes we do...do you have a good supply of buttons...yes we do. (Nothing is worse than driving to somewhere and being disappointed with what the vendor has to offer.)

Still unsure of whether this was futile 17 mile trip, I headed over to Benno's Buttons. Well, I arrived, walked in the store and knew immediately that I had made a "grave" mistake. I should have NEVER actually went to Benno's Buttons. I should have just ordered what I wanted on their website. Here is why...

DOES BENNO'S BUTTONS HAVE BUTTONS? Uh...yea...and trims!

So what did I come home with...BUTTONS!!!

And of course with all those metal buttons I had to make a bracelet that evening....Cute huh?They even had a sale rack for discontinued buttons. Of course I grabbed up some excellent bargains!!!

Where Have I Been...Again?

Health Update: Well I really haven't been feeling 80% (I haven't felt 100% since before I had children). You may recall an earlier "Where have I Been" post I mentioned that I had not been feeling well. My doctor ordered an additional test, an abdominal ultrasound. The result of the test showed that my liver is enlarged. My echo cardiogram was great...no heart problems were seen. So we are on the hunt to determine why my liver is enlarged. I will take more blood tests next week. If results are still abnormal, I will need to go see a specialist.

However, I have managed to do some fun things...I just get tired easily. Here is a quick summary!

Visit to DE: I spent 6 days in Dover, DE visiting my son and his wife. I had a wonderful time! First he took me to PHL for a real Philly cheese steak sandwich...with whip....yummy! On Saturday we drove over to Ocean City beach...that was a blast. Check out my tattoo...lol...it's henna (OK maybe I was having a little too much fun). I also had yummy funnel cake and some ranger fries smothered with apple cider vinegar...yum-my!!! Here are some pics...

Granddaughter's Birthday: Well it has come and gone. She is 10. She received all the goodies I sent and LOVED them! Here are some reminder pics that include a couple of decorative items I made for the gift wrap.

Sister's Birthday: Well it has come and gone. She is 58. I called her on her birthday to tell her Happy Birthday, of course, and to tell her that her birthday present was NOT in the mail. She laughed...again I'm stuck with the costuming! I know she will love it when she receives it.

Artful Voyage in Mexico: Sherry (GotArt!) and I have booked ourselves in a balcony cabin (we deserve it) on the Tim Holtz 8 day Artful Voyage in Mexico cruise. The cruise is scheduled for October...yippee!!!

Well that's enough for today. I will tell you about my "button adventure" in my next blog.

Majestic Reverie...

There is NO question that I have blogged myself into the company of a very privileged domain...the domain of the artist...ROYALTY indeed. And as such, I find the Queen's English far more appropriate to this auspicious occasion. Don't you think, my good fellow?

June 15th is a Special Day!

June 15th is the 10th birthday of my favorite grandchild, Ianna. I really miss her...she is not only my favorite grandchild, but my favorite art buddy. She always joined me for any new art project! She is such a fast learner...and loves to go teach to someone else (one of her many gifts).

In celebration of her birthday, I am sending her a little something every day this week. The first offering (Monday) is this little "birthday bird". He is made from paper clay with a foil and wire armature. He is gessoed and painted with acrylics, then finished with a clear gloss glaze. He is ready for the party with his fanciful party hat and reminds Ianna that her "10th birthday is almost here!"

The Tuesday offering is a mini "happy birthday collage" on canvas featuring Ianna when she was just 3 years old. Such a cutie!!!

WIP Fairy for My Sister Penny - Surprise

When I was visiting Penny last month she asked me to make her a fairy...I am sure she is not expecting it in this millennium. Penny's birthday is June 21st. She will be 58. The fairy will be her birthday present.

Where Have I Been?

First there was the trip to Sacramento / San Francisco. Then I was SICK! Well, it started with me being progressively more tired each day....pain between my shoulder blades on my back...pain in my upper chest...couldn't walk more than several steps without finding myself "breathless". Finally went to the doctor...diagnosis..."silent reflux" associated with my hiatal hernia.

"A hernia occurs when one part of the body protrudes through a gap or
opening into another part. A hiatal hernia forms at the opening in your
diaphragm where your food pipe (esophagus) joins your stomach. Part of the
stomach pushes through this opening causing a hiatal hernia.
Most small hiatal hernias don't cause problems, and you may never know you have a hiatal hernia unless your doctor discovers it when checking for another condition. But a large hiatal hernia can allow food and acid to back up into your esophagus,
leading to heartburn and chest pain."

My doctor prescribed medication and I am feeling MUCH better now. My doctor also ordered an echo cardiogram, which I completed last week, to make sure nothing was going on with my heart. I will get the results this week.

I regret being away for so long...but I'm back!!! I did manage to be creative through it all. I will share in my next post.

I Can't Explain It!!!

This is my nephew, William. I got to see him while I was in CA this weekend. Incredibly handsome guy...and these are his teeth. Gold with diamonds and rubies. He let me rant for about 5 minutes before he popped them out and told me they were removable.

I love my nephew. But (Us) parents will NEVER understand!

It kinda qualifies for creativity...

Theresa...It Was A Good Day

Except for a few tears that threatened to fall because I had never visited her in Sacramento, it was a joyful visit. Her medication for pain had been changed the day before which enabled her to walk a lot better and to remember everyone.

A Prayer Request for Theresa

My sister, Theresa, was diagnosed with cancer 2 1/2 years ago. Now what started as a spot on her liver is now pancreatic cancer. The DOCTOR'S prognosis is not good. I flew to Oakland on Wednesday and my older sister, Penny, and I drove to Sacramento to see her. Most of the day was spent setting up the particulars of her hospice care with her daughter. My Dad and brother also drove up from Bakersfield and Las Vegas. I am VERY glad that I was able to come see her now and spend some time.

Please pray. It is a difficult thing for a family to endure. I will be back home on Sunday and post more information.

Here is ridiculous looking Pettrucio. He still needs shoes and appropriate waistline treatment.

Here is tumultuous Kate. She still needs wigging and the decorative trim placed (glued) on the top of her bodice and sleeves. I made her dress without a pattern. It was kind of "sew as you go". I even managed to place some boning in the bodice. The bodice should be fitted much tighter. Next time I will do a cloth doll...it will be easier to fit this style of clothing.

Shhh...Kate doesn't have bloomers yet! Since her bloomers will not be featured in the photos I submit, I decided to finish them after I submit my entry.

Good news...I thought it was due on Monday. It is actually due Wednesday (tomorrow). I will submit this evening. Whew! I am glad I decided to participate.

Impromptu Make It and Take It

I decided the beginning of the week to have the "Make It and Take It" craft class that I had been talking about for a year. The thought was to encourage my Mom who loved crafts and truly was doing something creative everyday until she had a stroke 3 years ago.

It was a small class...2 neighbors, Dennise and Missy, a sister-in-law, Trina, my Mom, Wilma, and my Grandmother, Mattie (Motherdear). Mom did an excellent job with VERY little assistance. With the exception of my Mom, all others "were" non-crafters.

We had a wonderful time! Here are our finished items. Didn't they do a wonderful job!

Shakespeare Challenge Update

I am not finished with Pettrucio and Kate yet but they are coming along. I believe that I will be able to complete them on time.

Today's challenge was the ruff for Pettrucio. I scoured the internet and found a great site with instructions on how to make the ruff here. So off shopping I went to purchase some organza, some wire, decided I didn't need the horsehair braid for such a small ruff. While shopping, I passed the ribbon aisle. Duh..."just get some wired ribbon". Great idea...I can pleat that just like I was going to pleat the organza that I wired.

Got home...started pleating according to the instructions on the site. Pleating was not fun so after pinning a few pleats, I decided Pettruccio didn't need an authentic ruff that a gathered ruffLE. Time is of the essence!

I decided to fold the ribbon in half and take advantage of both edges of the ribbon and stitch on the fold. Why did I stitch with brown thread? Because that was what was loaded in the nearest needle...I mean, so you could see the stitches I made..hehehe.

So I stitched and gathered and DUH..."I can make the figure eights with gathered fabric!". Not bad, huh? I will fuss with them more later (when I have more time).

Digital Grounds by GOLDEN

Well I looked and looked but could not find an art supply that was carrying Golden's new "digital grounds". So last week I ordered the "try me" package from "Dick Blick"...they arrived on Thursday. This package contains 2 oz of each of the 5 different types of digital grounds they sell. I love "try me" packages.

"GOLDEN Digital Grounds turn just about any relatively flat surface into an ink-jet printable surface, providing the control and freedom to create textures and surfaces at whatever scale and shape desired." Click here for detail information and cautions on this new products from Golden.

I Need a MakeOver!!!

...for my blog! Things are not fitting properly (or I don't know how to make them fit)! Another task for the weekend!

Well my first artistic priority is to finish my Shakespeare challenge for ADO. It is coming along...but it is due on Monday. They also have a monthly challenge. It was announced yesterday...gotta participate...it is a great challenge! More later...

Finished Kate's head and armature. The head / face was a real challenge. My previous faces always looked like a guy with make-up on. I worked hard to try to create a feminine face (with Angelina Jolie lips).

I am working on completing the body today. I will post pictures this evening. I already have the costume for Kate laid out in my head (that always the hardest part for me). It's going to be simple and won't take too long.

Did I post pics of Petruccio? Don't remember...he still needs to be finished...hair, hat, shoes, ruff, pants. I will check to see if I posted pics...if not, I will post later today as well.

My First Train Case!!!

As you know I spent some time vacationing in sunny CA with my sister-in-law and best-friend-forever (i.e. sil-bff) Sherry Goodloe of GotArt? ...don't you just LOVE her blog!!!

Well, Sherry, my sil-bff, over the years has picked up some beautiful vintages cases. When I visited her they happened to be stacked up in preparation for the move that was cancelled for May.

If you have read my blog and hers, you are familiar with her unending generousity. As I was packing for my departure, Sherry was continually adding to my "loot" from my visit, throwing in things that she knew I would be able to use creatively.

The she looked over at the stack of beautiful vintage cases and said, "I oughta give you one of these cases", to which I replied, "Yes, I would love one".

Sherry perused the stack of vintage cases and pulled out a case. (My heart was thumping with anticipation.) She opened the case (she had a few item stored in the case) and said, "I was looking for that". She examined the interior, then closed the case and pulled out another, and I'm thinking, "that's fine, I love all of them".

She opened the next case and examined the interior, in excellent condition. She looked at me, put the case back in the stack and said, "I'll find you one". Meaning that she was NOT going to give up her treasures, but would find one for me while she was doing her "rounds" (i.e. flea markets, etc.).

Didn't she find me a beautiful vintage train case! I can't wait until it gets here!

I am so glad she is my sister-in-law best-friend-forever!!!

Been Missing My Blog

What have I been doing? My "favorite" thing, of course...spreading myself too thin!

First, there is the commitment I made to complete my unfinished projects. I finished Bernice and began working on the costuming for my other paper clay doll project. Costuming is a new thing for me with my art dolls...not easy. But I forgot...

I had signed up in January for Cyndi Mahlstadt class (Gwendolyn) that started in March over at one of my favorite online shopping spots, Joggles. The class has a specific duration, so I really couldn't postpone my participation. I love her dolls and I am having a great time in the class. See the pics. And then...

I joined the Art Dolls Only (ADO) Ning Network. I am sooooo excited to be participating in this group! And not exactly being the "bench warmer" type, I signed up for my first ADO challenge - Shakespeare. For my inspiration, I chose Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew" characters, Katherine (Kate) and Petruccio. It needs to be complete by May 4 and I am making pretty good (not great) progress, but having so much fun creating...but again...the costuming! I will finish the armature for Kate today. Then I needed a quickie...so

I went blurfing (i.e. surfing my favorite blogs) and bounced over to Creative Workshops, a site created by Gail of Shabby Cottage Studio. The site offers some great workshops and lots of "eye candy"! While I was enjoying my browsing, I noticed that Gail has a free gift bag tutorial available on the site!!! Perfect! Finishing the little gift bag in one sitting gave me a bit of a a sense of accomplishment I needed. (Yes I bounced over and did some shopping at Shabby Cottage Studio...you KNOW I did.) There is also a picture of my finished gift bag...thanks Gail!

I Just Had a Thought!!!

That Sherry!!!! I've been bamboozled...taken in by an elaborate method of deceit!!!

Remember back in February it was her birthday. Well, I decided that books would be my birthday theme for her...so I bought her a few books for her birthday. She made a comment in an email yesterday that we got so many books that now we can't remember where we saw the haiku brush technique (we both bought a Haiku brush while I was visiting).

DO YOU KNOW WHAT SHE DID!!!

Day 1 - Wire Dress Form

The first day (Thursday)...I wake up and find a gift for me. I thought, "how nice". Then Sherry told me that there would be a gift every morning!!! Wow! I should have thought of that! When I arrived I just handed over the goodies I had for her. My first gift (above) - a wire dress form to embellish (I can't wait to rust it up and embellish!)

How was I bamboozled?

There were so many wonderful gifts that I couldn't fit them in my suitcase! Since I didn't want to pay for an additional piece of luggage, I decided to mail them. There were so many gifts that they would not all fit into the FREE boxes available at the USPS! I had to buy a large sized box to fit everything. I threw in the few items I purchased while there.

My box arrived on Saturday and I began to unload it. Where am I going to put everything in my 1 room existence (another story) so I can remember where it is when I need to use it.

Now I am thinking...all the gifts were PAYBACK for the birthday books! What do you think?

Where Do I Begin?

With my sincere apologies for being away from my blog for so long!

I had a WONDERFUL vacation in CA with Sherry of GotArt? (who happens to be my sister-in-law and bff). You're going to be SO jealous!

But first...I arrived on Wednesday at the Ontario, CA airport, not the John Wayne airport as I intended. The best that I can figure out is that when I was changing my reservations with the help of a reservation agent, he used my default instead of the destination I had originally reserved. Got a great price on an AVIS car rental...at the John Wayne airport...too bad I was at the Ontario airport where they had NO cars.

I tend to stay pretty calm in situations after all, I am an AVIS Preferred Customer, standing in the AVIS Preferred Customer line. The agent said they had some cars coming, but they were a little slow getting them prepared (i.e. washed, etc.) for the next customer. I smiled and gave him my patient eyes and said "If it's any consolation, I rent from AVIS because the cars are always clean and the fuel tank is always full." He seemed more relaxed.

Well, the first car up was a little light blue Hyundai...well I had reserved an intermediate size vehicle, but I drove away in the Hyundai, not for the great price I had for the intermediate car I had reserved at John Wayne...but for about $200 MORE!!! Well...it is what it is...headed out to run a couple errands before meeting my daughter and grand-daughter for an early dinner.

On the way, I decided the the Hyundai was just TOO small and uncomfortable for me to spend that much money! So I stopped at the AVIS in Chino Hills and explained my situation and asked to swap into a larger car. Well...you can't exactly swap. You have to close out the car (and paying for a minimum of 1 day - even though I had the car only an hour...$60 bucks with all the airport fees) you have and start a new contract at the new location.

So that's what I did...and with paying for 1 day (really 1 hour) with the Hyundai plus the cost of the new car for the remaining period ( a Chevy Malibu)...I ended up $100 bucks LESS than my great price for the car I reserved at the John Wayne airport!

Don't start the party too soon! He drove the car around to me, gets out and tells me that he didn't have time to wash it and the fuel tank was only 1/2 full!

OK here comes the WONDERFUL stuff...

Early dinner with my beautiful daughter-in-law and grand-daughter was awesome. We went to Chipotle's (my first time)...love the concept and the food. It was soooo good to see them...I really miss them in my daily life. After dinner we strolled over to the Chino Hills Farmers Market where I bought kettle corn for my nephew (Taylor) and 2 pieces of the "mystery item". Sherry is having a great give away for the person that can identify the "mystery item". Pop over here if you want to give it a try. Hmmm...hope I didn't give it away!

Sisters Got Art?

Yep!!! Well if you have read Sherry's last few Got Art? blogs, you already know that I am having a great time on my CA vacation! It is so wonderful to have uninterrupted creativity. Sherry and I have waaaaayyy more ideas than we could ever execute in a long weekend...but it has been hilarious trying. There is a sneak peek of some of the things we have been creating and places we have been here.

Every day I wake up to another gift (can hardly wait to share with you). How cool is that!!!

Meet Bernice...

According to my commitment...I am trying to finish my started projects before going on with something new. I had 2 paper clay projects in process. I was able to finish one over the weekend.

Meet Bernice...

With basket in hand and flowers tucked tightly under her arm, where could Bernice be headed? Perhaps she is on her way to school and the basket is filled with morsels for her lunch (and to share). Maybe Bernice is on the way to a sick neighbor with a basket full of yummy homemade treats and hand-picked flowers for good cheer. You decide.

Bernice is a one of a kind art doll. She is hand sculpted (no molds) from paper clay. Bernice was inspired by a photo of my great aunt Bernice taken in 1923. A photo of the real Bernice is shown also.

A Raisin in the Sun

Well, thanks to a nudge from my blog buddy Sue Barton of Bartons Originals and a near threat from my sister-in-law Sherry Goodloe of Got Art, I made it to the play on Saturday. I love community theater...I forgot how much.
I enjoyed the play (A Raisin in the Sun) and enjoyed being out of the house...and I looked gorgeous...lol. I remembered a quote from the play that I love..it always touches me when I hear it (the mother is responding to her daughters harshness when the brother loses the family's money)...

"Honey, when do you think is the time to love somebody? Is it when they get a big promotion? Is it when they’re successful? Is it when all their investments pay off? Is that the time you love somebody?
Honey, the time to love someone is when they are down and out. The time to love someone is when they’ve made a mistake in their life and they feel bad. The time to love somebody is when they have nobody to reach out to. The time to love somebody is when life has whipped and beaten them.
That’s the time to love somebody."

“A RAISIN IN THE SUN” is a play by Lorraine Hansberry and tells the story of a family living and struggling on Chicago's South Side in the 1950s. It is a fiercely moving portrait of people whose hopes and dreams are constantly deferred. The themes are very much relevant today.

"A Raisin in the Sun" was the first play written by an African-American woman to be produced on Broadway. March of 2009 marks the 50th year anniversary of the Play's Broadway debut. It was made into a major motion picture in 1961 starring legends Sidney Portier and Ruby Dee. "

Too Stressed!

And you will never guess what has stressed me out! An invitation (that I accepted) to go out to see a play this evening with the next door neighbor. I have been stuck in the house so long...I can't seem to even WANT to get out! This is not good.

Also I have been away from my computer (and you) all week because I am letting my brother use it. I have been working on the two paperclay projects...finished one. Too bummed to even pull out the camera.

It's a hour before we are supposed to leave...I will let you know if I make it.

I just love this blog world!!! They definitely keep you honest! Regarding the multiple inquiries to the status of "My Paperclay Adventure"...

Admittedly, I have been moving back and forth between projects. But thanks to the vow I made to Julie Bouésso at Mademoiselle Julie (based on her like committment), I will be finishing my unfinished projects before I start anything new.

The first project I will finish is my "paperclay adventure". The sculpting is basically finished and I am starting to dress her. Here are a couple of pics I took with my cell. (I'll post better pictures this weekend. )

What Happens to a Lesson Deferred...

In my preparation for my business trip to Boston last week, I stopped at a retail clothing store to pick up a few items. You see, I have put on a few pounds since moving to Dallas, and since this was a business trip, I certainly didn't want to looked squished and or "unprofessional". [OK! It is really not that bad, but can I have a new outfit, please! And it really has little to do with this story, except to say...I was there.]
Well, while I was trying on my new outfit, one of the ladies that was also shopping, finished her selections and stepped to the cashier's counter to purchase her items. Well, as I stepped out of the dressing rooms, the cashier and the shopper took one look at each other and said "Don't I know you?". It just took them a few minutes to sort it out. Unfortunately, the cashier didn't figure it out first.

The cashier...a college student, but about 25ish.
The shopper...likely a corporate type, 50ish.

Shopper: I know who you are! Uh uh, Uh uh...I know who you are! (She let the cashier ponder a few seconds between the uh uhs...which made the cashier QUITE anxious.) Your family had a home next door my home several years ago. You are that little girl that threw raw eggs at my house and I had to knock on your door and tell your parents! Did you get in whoopin'?

Well the cashier's face confessed it all! She apologized repeatedly and said she didn't understand why she had done that as a child and that she had not thrown eggs at other houses (She probably should have kept that little tidbit to herself...it didn't make matters better.). Twenty minutes later when I finalized my purchases and the shopper was long gone, she was still embarrassed and was trying to figure out what made her do such a thing.

The moral of this story:

GOD: I was headed for destruction when I found Him and learned He was there all the time waiting on me to receive Him.

I played Bell Lyre (a lyre-shaped glockenspiel) in Lincoln Junior High School marching band. And was FORCED to learn marimba-think xylophone made of wood. Music MOVES Me! I recently heard Miri Ben-Ari "the hip-hop violinist"...awesome! Music scratches an itch that just can't be reached any other way!
LONG, HOT, STEAMY BATHS with Crabtree and Evelyn bath products....love their "new to me" Naturals...YUM!
SOLITUDE: While I absolutely LOVE "the party", for me it has to be balanced with some creative solitude...don't bother me when I am in my "art zone", I am being refreshed and renewed.
YOU! I am pretty new to the "blog world". Being able to communicate and share from my somewhat sequestered situation (working from home, caring for disabled mother and grand mother) has "saved" me.

That was hard...but somehow it felt good to remember those things.

Now the really hard part...

Through the OWOH giveaway, I had an opportunity to meet so many wonderful blogger/artists. As well as Barton Originals, I drive by these sites daily. I LOVE the kreativity of these bloggers!

Some Serious Catching Up - Part 4 Hoover Dam

Part 4 – Accidental Tourist – Hoover Dam
Well…while I was taking care of a “bit of business”, it happened that it took me past the Hoover Dam (which I had never been to before). My brother and I stopped and took some pictures. You might recall that I am “never leaving home without [my camera]” so it was cool that I had it with me. However…I now have a new mantra…Never leave home without charged batteries in your camera. Because I ran our of battery juice I only got to take a few pictures. They are building a new bypass bridge to divert non-tourist traffic away from the bridge…structural engineering is an awesome thing!

Some Serious Catching Up - Part 3 Paperclay

Part 3 – My Paper Clay Adventure

It got delayed because I couldn’t find my battery operated Black and Decker drill (sometimes the slightest things can throw off the creative juices). Well, of course it was near the whole time. I ran across it last week after work and started out on my adventure again.

I have tried my hand at sculpting using Polymer clay. I like it, but I am such a novice (I haven’t sculpted anything in YEARS), it has been challenging to get the results that I am looking for. I won’t be giving up on the Polymer clay, BUT I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE PAPER CLAY!!!!!

I have sculpted a few heads in the polymer that all looked like the “wicked witch of the east”. What was I doing wrong?

This time for the paper clay, I drew a picture first…and the sculpted head looked exactly like…the wicked witch of the east…again! For a moment I considered that the “wicked witch of the east” might be my “brand”, my “trademark”…NOT!!! So I worked with it adding a bit of clay here and there…I made eyes from paper clay also.

Shaped paper clay into balls…stuck a piece of sturdy wire in each ball and let
them dry…painted dried balls with acrylics and then glazed before adding to the
head.

As I began to add bits of clay to her face, she began speaking her name, once finished I will share the name with you. Here is where we are so far…witch me luck!

My sister-in-law (Sherry) is so awesome! I ordered a couple of items (vintage bottles) out of her Etsy shop "GotArt" and she put it right in the mail (she is so good about that). Well! I picked up the mail and there was a BIG box...and I thought, "Those bottles must be bigger than I thought". I opened up the box and it was filled with lots of sister-in-law LOVE...look what I found! Oh Yes, the bottles were in there also...lol.

Even a box of Valentine Hearts...YUM! Now is that a great sister-in-law or WHAT?

Collage - Mossy Style

I decided to take JoAnnA Pierotti's new online class, Collage - Mossy Style. This is one of 2 online classes that JoAnnA is currently offering. JoAnnA's class offers a series of videos with simple easy to follow instructions - absolute quality! This is the resulting collage that I created at 2:30 AM this morning.

The collage is on a 5x5 canvas I purchased for 97 cents at Michael's (yes, Michael's). The photograph is from a collage sheet gifted to all who entered Julie Herrmann's giveaway at HeArt Collective during the OWOH (isn't she sweet!). JoAnnA's technique for creating the textured background is really cool. Add a little ephemera and Voila! I am still working on my muddy backgrounds (and my photography), but I am not disappointed with my results at all!

I seem to have a lot of blog catching up to do! Tomorrow...."to the mattresses!"

I decided on Thursday to take a weekend trip to Las Vegas to take care of a "bit of business" in Kingman, AZ (a whole other Oprah). This was the second time that I had been to Vegas since all the new hotels, etc have been built and opened...and I still have only seen them from the airplane....which is an incredible view!

Anyway, Saturday morning my brother (Goodie) and I drove over to Kingman to take care of that "bit of business". As it turns out, Goodie and I both are blonde (not to offend anyone). We totally forgot that AZ was in a different time zone than NV, so arrived too late to take care that "bit of business". The "bit of business" kinda worked out...but it was kind of an expensive trip to not exactly accomplish its intent. This little story definitely needed to stay ion Vegas...but I couldn't resist sharing with you. However, I did get to spend time with my nephew, Marquel...the sweetie pie at the top of this post.

Since I was in Kingman anyway, which is a very small town that is FULL of antiques stores, I convinced Goodie to visit a couple of stores with me. This is what I brought home with me (but not all that I bought (explanation below).

An interesting little framed picture in a box...still trying to figure out what this is.
It is in a little leather box....there is a gold metal frame around the
picture and under the glass...does anyone know anything about this item?

And my favorite find...this broken porcelain doll head...
with probably just enough of a neck to attach to a doll project.

About the other items I purchased...as I was paying for items, the husband owner (whom we found out had grown up on 134th and Budlong in Los Angeles which was just a few miles where Goodie and I grew up in Gardena, CA - small world) asked..."How are you going to get that back to Texas?"...to which I quickly answered, "In my luggage, of course." (Another blonde moment.)

The problem...the items I purchased were 3 bullet / missile casings that I thought might look good as part of an assemblage doll. Of course, the casings were empty, but I don't think they would be able to determine that via the baggage xray device.

Can you see me now on the evening news! Why do people always look horrible in mug shots? They would have pulled me off of the plane and asked questions later! Goodie is going to send them to me via the US Postal Service...keep an eye out for me on the evening news.

Goodie and I also stopped at the Hoover Dam. I also got to visit my sister-in-law's hair salon opened recently. I also took some pictures of Goodie's truck. I will share these pictures in my next post...this post is already too long!

Unburdened...Unfinished

Well this is what I have been working on - still unfinished. I am still working through techniques in "Taking Flight" by Kelly Rae Roberts (I love her book). I have named the piece "Unburdened". I will share the inspiration behind the piece with its final unveiling (when it's finished).

I am working on my abilty to create depth in my backgrounds. I painted the 12x24 canvas with Golden Black Gesso. Next some Golden Molding Paste to create some texture (I need to be a bit bolder in the use of my molding pastes…next time). I then added some Golden Quinacridone / Nickel Azo Gold. I allowed to dry completely between each application. Then I covered everything in a wash of Golden Titan Buff, then blotted it here and there with a paper towel.
I stared at it for a day until I saw a face. I filled in the face area with Titanium White, Iron Oxide and a bit of Titan Buff. The back of her head disappears into the canvas. My intent is to lift a face from the filled in area by adding shadows and highlights.

You can see I have added the mouth and some shadows and highlights. I also added arms and a heart with wings...waiting for shadows and highlights.

To the Post Office!!!

Off to the Post Office in the morning. I have lots of shipping to do. I will be sending off my OWOH items as well as some things for my FAVORITE grandaughter. I am sending my favorite grandaughter "Pictureka" (it's kinda like "where's Waldo")...she is great at that kind of stuff, I suck at it! I am also sending a monkey to deliver a big hug from Grandma Lala and some Vera Wang Princess items in the cute little bag. AND I am sending her 2 outfits that I think she will look gorgeous in!

One other thing I should mention...I gifted myself with Photoshop. I may be going digital with my art any day now...

Happy Birthday Clarence!!!

Today is the 29th birthday of my oldest manchild, Clarence. It took 17 hours to deliver my precious baby. Following the delivery, hormones are crazy and emotions are high. I remember when they put him on my stomach as they pushed me to recovery, I looked at my baby and started to cry. His head was elongated from his trip through the birth canal. I thought "my baby has a cucumber head" and began to cry. Well, it was as good a reason to cry as anything...crying just had to happen! Of course his head didn't stay that way. Here is one of my favorite pictures of Clarence with his wife and daughter.

Isn't he handsome! If you read this today and you believe in the power of God through prayer, pray for my baby today according to how the Spirit may lead you. A mother thanks you.

More Shopping!!!

I seem to have more supplies and ideas than finished art. Yes, I have been shopping. I NEEDED to visit the greatest quilt store in Dallas, TX, Quilts ‘n More . It is located in historic downtown Midlothian, Texas, just 30 miles south of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. I met 2 of the 3 owners Kathleen Allen, Jean McKinney (twins). It was the friendliest place and every fabriholics dream!

I was very controlled with my spending, but I did join the Block of the Month Club that meets the 1st Saturday of the month. Listen to this! The first Saturday you pay $5 bucks for the material for your first block. If you show up the next 1st Saturday with your FINISHED block, you get your next block free! So if you show up with your finished block each month, at the end of the year you will have a quilt top for $5 (in my case $10 - since I got started late I had to pay for my January and February blocks)! That is awesome! Here are the few things I purchased including my January and February block kits: Yummy batiks from their gorgeous selection, Moda "urban couture" precut 6" blocks. These blocks include several different fabrics and are great for quilting, and for small faric projects. I have already created a handful of little hearts that I have embellished with beads and stuff (lol) for my dollies. I also picked up a couple of small paper piecing kits to try my hand at paper piecing.

So I left the quilt store and my new friends and "lo and behold", there was a thrift store right across the street! Here are the goodies I found there. First, a new magazine holder for $2 bucks. Now I can organize SOME of the mags and books I have purchased since I moved to Texas. If I feel really industrious one day I may get out the gesso!

Here are my other thrift store finds. Two square wooden frames with mirrors; small silver-plated serving tray; a silver-plated compote and swan; a brass candle holder that will become a stand for a dollie and (in the foreground) a little metal candle holder that is headed for the rust bin.

An since I had to pass by Hobby Lobby anyway, I stopped in and picked up a few miscellaneous items.

The two little stamps (i.e. flourish and the bird), I actually grabbed out of the $1 bin at Michaels last week. I figured I would throw those in so you could see them.

Happy Birthday to my sister-in-law-best-friend-forever Sherry Goodloe of GotArt. My sons Clarence and Aaron affectionately call her "AuntieMommy". She is having a great birthday month. Pop over and wish her the best! GotArt

Well I got a chance to run out on Sunday. Inspired by my new book "Acrylic Revolution" by Nancy Reyner, my first stop was Asel Art Supply where I picked up some more Golden items. Paint brushes were on sale for 50% off, so I also picked up 2 gorgeous paint brushes. I also picked up 2 6x12 wooden supports. I have already painted one with gesso...since it seems to be the prerequisite to everything!

Oh! Who is in the picture? It is actually "Betsy" the cousin of my maternal grandmother. I cropped her from a picture with my grandmother and one other cousin that was taken in 1925 when my grandmother was only 11 years old. The picture of the 3 of them is unbelievably precious! You couldn't handle so much preciousness all at once so you will only see Betsy today! I printed Betsy on scrapbook paper (a great tip seen in my "Exhibition 36" book by Susan Tuttle).

As I was on my way home from Asel Art Supply I noticed a thrift store! I looked around for a while until the rusty item below jumped off the shelf. I looks like it is a candle holder of some sort. It had a small item (definitely a candle holder) taped to it. The small holder will probably end up being feet for something. The larger holder is screaming DOLL BODY to me right now...we'll see. I am quite satisfied with my $2 find! Overall, I think this store will not be a good source for great finds. It gets a 3 on the "junk worthiness" scale.

Never Leave Home Without It!!!

I will try not to make this too long a story...

I probably haven't mentioned that I am a IT Project Manager (the real job). In May of 2008, I moved from sunny CA to humid Texas in search for gold (affordable real estate). God's plan and timing is just a little different than mine...I am totally with that...His plan and timing are always better!

As it happened, the gold is still within reach, but in the meantime I am living with my 75 year old Mom and my 93 year old grandmother and providing support they need currently as they recover from a stroke and surgery, respectively. There is no place I'd rather be than helping them.

I work from home which is a real blessing for this circumstance. There are caregivers coming and going all week long to handle personal care, physical and occupational therapy, as well as weekly nurse visits. All that to say...I don't get out much.
So Thursday after work (I keep a strict schedule), I went wandering not to far from home to Agatha's Antiques and fell upon the most romantic scene!!! I said ROMANTIC!

A young man had orchestrated a proposal at Agatha's Antiques! Why Agatha's? As it turns out the couple collects bottles and they purchased their first Dr Pepper bottle at Agatha's shop! The young man had advised the owners of what he planned to do. He placed a Dr Pepper bottle near the rear of the store. He tied a string around the bottle which his "intended" followed to a small white box with a ring in it. The answer was YES!!!

Now wouldn't it be lovely if I had pictures to show you...WELL I DON'T because my camera was left at home once again and I missed this beautiful photo-op. What is worse, they didn't have a camera either!

So from this moment forward (lol), me and my Sony cybershot 5.1 megapixel camera with 3x optical lens are ONE. I will never leave home without it again!!!

But I did get some shopping done...

Pretend That Today is Yesterday...

...because that is when I intended to post this blog. I have put myself on a daily program to continue to visit all of the OWOH blogs. I may even make it to them all...NOT...but I'm having fun trying!

Remember those backgrounds from the last blog? Well I started working on one of them that includes an altered photograph. It is unfinished - but take a look! I am trying to keep to neutrals (excepts for the lips). We will see how it works out.

Creativity Preparedness

I was busy on Friday evening creating backgrounds for Saturday's creative efforts. The first is a collage of scrapbook paper on a 12 x 12 piece of wood. The next is acrylics and charcoal on a 11 x 14 canvas "a la" "Taking Flight". On the last piece above I used gel to attach a sheet of tissue paper to an 11 x 14 canvas.

Then I decided to repurpose some additional pages from the latest phone book! I also repurposed some plastic bags by placing 8 layers between 2 pieces of paper and ironing until they melted together as seen in the January / Februaty edition of "Cloth Paper, Scissors" magazine. Not sure what that is going to turn out to be.

Good and Tired!

Well it has been a good day visiting all the OWOH blogs, but now I'm tired...I will begin again tomorrow. I have found so many wonderful bloggers!

Wow! My First Award!

This was an emotional moment for me. ..can't explain it. Sherry Goodloe of GOT ART! honored me with the Kreativ-Award. Sherry has been extremely instrumental in getting me started and encouraging me to be creative. Sherry is my mentor, a great teacher, and wonderful source of inspiration! Thank you!

Long-legged Girls with Skinny Legs and Little Heads

I invited my sister Penny to take a look at my blog. She is going to wish she did! The title of this post is from an Alvin Ailey quote. In her younger years, my sister was kinda gangly - I thought it fit.

Still unfinished, the focus of today's multi-media project includes a vintage picture of my sister, Penny (nickname). I rescued the picture from a group photo taken of Penny's 5th grade class. Imagine...that expression is still on every picture that was distributed to Mr. Thompson's 1962 class (remember when school pictures were free). My Mom always kept her "greased up" and well dressed...but that expression - PRICELESS!

I started out by repurposing some wallpaper as background that Sherry Goodloe from "Got Art" repurposed as package wrap when I purchased an item from her Etsy Shop "Got Art". That was cool, but I had a heck of a time trying to get it to stay stuck to the canvas.

I didn't use any molding paste on this piece...I'm already sorry. Is it too late?

Brief Paper Clay Adventure

While I am still having a wonderful time with Kelly Rae's "Taking Flight", I have decided to go on a brief" paperclay" adventure. I will also get to try out my battery-operated "Craft Multi-Tool" I picked up last week at Hobby Lobby ($5.99). The torn paper is from a phone book...I am on a mission to repurpose all the trees the companies are killing to make these books people don't use!

I've never worked with paperclay before...I think it will be fun!
